It is well known that pidgin, a rudimentary contact language formed of lexicons of two or more languages, can develop into a full language, known as creole, after a single generation. In other words, only by word-play and interaction of children can a true merging of different languages happen. If we take this concept a bit further into more general sense of cultural interaction, we could say that it is only after the play and interaction by children on various cultural influences can the rudimentary 'pidgin culture' of modern Korea develop into a true ¡®creole culture'. Maybe it is not surprising that it is only in the recent times that we are seeing Korean artists who are comfortable with working in both East and West.
With his Wonderland project, Yeon-Doo Jung goes to young children to witness this play of different cultural influences firsthand. This project is a series of diptychs. On one side we see sketches and drawings by young children, subject matter being their day-to-day life or their favourite stories. On the other side we see his beautiful and tightly composed photographs which shows his interpretation/ translation of those sketches. The photographs capture the innocence and spontaneous creativity of young children intent on telling their stories in a visual manner. |
